After a nomadic childhood, Bibi was trained in sculpture at The Florence Academy of Arts, The Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, and The Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague; Bibi decided to turn her attention to creating art of the wearable variety, launching her fine jewelry line in 2006 after discovering her passion in the delectable art of priceless luxury living on through generations. Having resided in Amsterdam for the past 15 years, Bibi is renowned for her imaginative aesthetic, using exotic materials and sustainable gold, diamonds and precious stones from around the globe to create truly unique designs. Bibi van der Velden offers a playful, personal and highly artistic take on fine jewelry. Inspiration
A Dream on Fire
“To me, inspiration is not only something transcendent. It requires discipline and a state of perpetual awareness. We are constantly surrounded by beauty, even if sometimes it is in its unconventional, unattractive forms. I’ve always kept journals: writing, sketching, documenting - it’s become a bit of an obsession, never wanting to be without a pen or paper. For me they are a way of collecting my thoughts and expectations of what goes on out there, and how that resonates in here. [My] applied art in fine jewelry design bears aesthetic and emotional value, and I create objects that last through generations, using sustainable mining to ensure a future legacy..”
Workshop
The White Space
Bibi and her husband knew for many years that they hoped to create a personal habitat where creativity could flow. For the past two years, they have been renovating an old schoolhouse in Amsterdam : a fresh, blank space.
“Creating your own habitat is important, a privilege, and an intensely and spiritually relevant process,” they say of the experience. And the space that they have created holds an inspirational energy, met with calmness, that Bibi believes is essential for her artistic process. “In sculpting I am able to express this inorganic form, using unyielding matter. The hard graft and the meditative state that go into making a piece are all a part of the creative process.”
